What is Remedial Massage?

Remedial Massage can assess and physically treat myofascial pain, injury and dysfunction affecting movement and mobility. It is applied in the preventative, corrective and rehabilitative phases of therapy to restore and maintain the normal integrity of the soft tissue structure (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) of the human body.

Pain or symptoms caused by muscle (myo) or fascia is described as myofascial pain. Myofascial pain is usually not specific and is often described by the patient as a ‘deep ache’, ‘tightness’ or ‘tenderness’ in an area.

It can vary in intensity and radiate to other areas. Other symptoms can include reduced range of motion of muscles and joints, stiffness, fatigue, weakness, numbness or a tingling sensation. There are many other symptoms depending on the condition and patients can have one or many symptoms.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT

Assessment – Clinical assessment is reliant on history taking, examination routines of particular joints or regions, assisted by highly developed tactile, palpatory skills and a thorough understanding of joint and muscular assessment procedures. These skills distinguish Remedial & Myotherapy from other physical therapies. Assessment of potential causes of dysfunction is also important, as is a detailed postural examination.

Treatment – Soft tissue manipulation, Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial dry needling, Myofascial release, Postural assessment and correction, Corrective exercises (stretches, strength), Core stability exercises and workshops, Diet and nutritional advice.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REMEDIAL MASSAGE AND STANDARD MASSAGE?

Yes! Remedial massage therapists are highly skilled and can treat a wide range of physical issues and injuries. Remedial massage uses many different techniques to achieve reduction in pain and symptoms.

CAN I COME EVEN IF I DON'T HAVE A SPECIFIC ISSUE?

Absolutely! We have many clients that come in for maintenance treatment or just a relaxation massage on occasion.

WILL IT BE PAINFUL?

Remedial massage can cause discomfort at times, however we will always work within your comfort level so just let us know if you need a little less pressure.

DO YOU OFFER HEALTH FUND REBATES?

YES WE DO!! All our remedial massage therapists are registered with industry associations and all the major health funds. We offer HICAPS at our clinic for both Chiropractic and Massage.

WHEN WILL I FEEL THE BENEFITS?

Many clients feel better straight away, however some clients including those with chronic issue take a few sessions to respond.

WILL I BE SORE THE NEXT DAY?

It is common to be a little sore the day after massage. The soreness often only last a day and many clients that have regular massage don’t experience this anymore.
